For the purposes of this paper, we have classi ed the level of integration of current and past approaches into three categories: tightly-coupled, loosely-coupled, or semicoupled systems. We then argue that loose coupling is more appropriate given the current state of the art and given that it allows one to measure more precisely which components of the language model are most important. We will detail how the speech component in our approach interacts with the language model and discuss why we chose our language model.

Experimental evaluation of Italian language models for large-dictionary speech recognition
This paper reports on experiments performed on the ltalian language in order to assess the efficiency of probabilistic language models with reference to a task of large-dictionary speech recognition. Two different types of models, an M -gram and an Mg-gram one, have been investigated for comparison purposes. The quality of the models trained on a corpus of 3.5 million words was measured in term...
متن کاملStatistical Variation Analysis of Formant and Pitch Frequencies in Anger and Happiness Emotional Sentences in Farsi Language
Setup of an emotion recognition or emotional speech recognition system is directly related to how emotion changes the speech features. In this research, the influence of emotion on the anger and happiness was evaluated and the results were compared with the neutral speech. So the pitch frequency and the first three formant frequencies were used. The experimental results showed that there are lo...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Gender and Age Classification in Speech Signals
Accurate gender classification is useful in speech and speaker recognition as well as speech emotion classification, because a better performance has been reported when separate acoustic models are employed for males and females. Gender classification is also apparent in face recognition, video summarization, human-robot interaction, etc. Although gender classification is rather mature in a...
متن کاملChart Parsing of Stochastic Spoken Language Models
Performance in speech recognition systems has progressed to the point where it is now realistic to begin integrating speech with natural language systems to produce spoken language systems. Two factors have contributed to the advances in speech: statistical modeling of the input signal and language constraints. To produce spoken language systems, then, the grammar formalisms used in natural lan...
متن کاملThe Karlsruhe-Verbmobil speech recognition engine
Verbmobil, a German research project, aims at machine translation of spontaneous speech input. The ultimate goal is the development of a portable machine translator that will allow people to negotiate in their native language. Within this project the University of Karlsruhe has developed a speech recognition engine that has been evaluated on a yearly basis during the project and shows very prom...
متن کاملPractical and Efficient Incorporation of Syntactic Features into Statistical Language Models
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Statistical Machine Translation (SMT), among other natural language processing applications, rely on a language model (LM) to provide a strong linguistic prior over word sequences of the often prohibitively large and complex hypothesis space of these systems. The language models deployed in most state-of-the-art ASR and SMT systems are n-gram models. Sever...
